U. S. NAVY TRIDENT NUCLEAR SUBMARINES
The U.S. Navy's nuclear submarine force was instrumental in bringing about the end of the Cold War. Yet, few Americans have ever been inside these extraordinarily complex vessels. In the past few years, movies such as "Hunt for Red October" and "Crimson Tide" have provided the public a "Hollywood" glimpse of the nuclear submarine force. The Trident nuclear submarines are 580 feet long, and displace approximately 18,000 tons. This makes them larger than many surface combatants. They are powered by one nuclear reactor, and can stay submerged and undetected for months at a time. Each submarine can carry 24 missiles. Larry Smith has been privileged to be invited to participate in some Trident submarine shakedown trials off the coast of the submarine base at Kings Bay, Georgia. During these shakedown trials, the crews make sure all the onboard equipment is working perfectly. Larry Smith and Trans Pixs Worldwide proudly presents a selection of photos from some of his trips. More photos will be added in the coming weeks.
